The glorious start to Triple Crown season is just days away with the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby set for Saturday at Churchill Downs.

You would be hard-pressed to find a Derby in recent memory with as many storylines as this Run For The Roses, and not just because 20 horses officially registered for post positions at Tuesday’s draw. There’s a lot of madness among this mix, and that’s even without Rob Gronkowski’s horse in the field.

That wackiness starts with the early-line favorites. A three-year-old that never raced as a two-year-old hasn’t won the Derby since Apollo in 1882, and yet, the two early-line favorites, Justify and Magnum Moon, both fit that bill to break the so-called Apollo’s Curse.

In any other year, a horse like Audible that ran a 1:07 and impressed so thoroughly at the Florida Derby, might be a 5-2 favorite with the first odds. But many an expert handicapper is looking at this field — even 20 deep — and saying it’s the most across-the-board talent to race in the Derby in many years.

With all that said, let’s take a look at the basics to begin Derby Week.
